The obvious answer is usually a trap
Unassume is an independent mobile game studio from the West Midlands. We design lateral-thinking puzzles for Android in which the first idea a player has is rarely the right one.
Each puzzle in our designs hides its trick in plain sight. The fun comes from the moment a player stops assuming and starts looking at what is actually there.
Our puzzles are short and self-contained, so they suit a coffee break as well as a long evening. A gentle hint system nudges players toward the assumption they should question, without spelling out the solution. There are no timers, and every puzzle can be revisited after it has been solved, because seeing the trick a second time is often as satisfying as finding it.
What does a puzzle look like?
A single screen with a short question and a few objects. Everything needed to solve it is visible; nothing depends on outside knowledge.
Why lateral thinking?
Because the best puzzles change how you look at a problem. We want players to leave each one with a small new habit of mind.
Is there a wrong way to play?
No. Tapping around, guessing and backtracking are all part of it. The puzzles are designed so that experiments never lock you out.
Who are the puzzles for?
Anyone who enjoys riddles, magic tricks or crosswords. No maths or trivia knowledge is needed, and the wording is kept short and plain so that the puzzles also work well for younger teenagers and for people reading in a second language.
